O dia 17 de janeiro faz parte do calendário oficial de eventos do Estado por meio da Lei nº 13.470, de 18 de maio de 2004, que instituiu a data comemorativa referenciando o dia em que o Ceará ganhou autonomia da Capitania de Pernambuco, em 1799, tornando-se administrativamente independente. A emancipação do Ceará foi garantida por Carta Régia assinada pela Imperatriz de Portugal, D. Maria I, em virtude do crescimento populacional e econômico que a antiga capitania do Ceará apresentava em 1799.
