A origem deste nome é puramente religiosa. Neste dia, é celebrada a tradicional missa das cinzas. As cinzas utilizadas neste ritual provêm da queima dos ramos abençoados no Domingo de Ramos do ano anterior. A estas cinzas mistura-se água benta. De acordo com a tradição, o celebrante desta cerimônia utiliza essas cinzas úmidas para sinalizar uma cruz na fronte de cada fiel, proferindo a frase “Lembra-te que és pó e que ao pó voltarás” ou a frase “Convertei-vos e crede no Evangelho”.
