Um gato-mourisco, também conhecido como jaguarundi, morreu atropelado na CE-292, na comunidade do Sítio Teixeiras, em Araripe, na manhã de ontem (19). Segundo testemunhas, o animal tentava atravessar a rodovia ao lado de outro exemplar de sua espécie, quando foi atingido por um caminhão, morrendo no local. A carcaça foi extraviada.
O veículo seguia de Campos Sales, município vizinho, até Araripe, quando aconteceu o acidente. Os pneus atingiram abaixo do tórax e cortou parte do rabo do felino. A outra espécime que, segundo os moradores, tinha um tamanho maior que a atingida, conseguiu escapar e correu para a mata. O motorista do caminhão seguiu o trajeto sem tentar socorrê-lo.
A população suspeitou que o animal seria uma onça parda, porém, o biólogo Charles Sousa identificou que se trata de Herpailurus yagouaroundi, conhecido como jaguarundi, gato-mourisco ou gato azul. Considerado um felino de pequeno porte, ele possui corpo alongado, a cabeça é pequena e achatada, orelhas pequenas e arrendadas, pernas curtas e cauda longa, podendo medir cerca de 70 cm de altura e pesar 8 quilos.
Charles acredita que o exemplar atropelado era jovem. “Este animal não oferece risco ao ser humano. Eles não atacam. Em geral, eles fogem para evitar contato com a nossa espécie”, completa.
“O gato mourisco naturalmente possui três padrões de coloração uniforme: amarelo, cinza mesclado com branco e cinza mesclado com amarelo. Essa espécie possui uma dieta generalista, com preferência à pequenos vertebrados terrestres como roedores, marsupiais ou tatu-peba. Ocasionalmente, eles também podem a vir se alimentar de pequenas aves ou répteis, como serpentes ou teiú”, explica Charles.
O biólogo, que também é pesquisador da Universidade Regional do Cariri (URCA), lamenta o extravio da carcaça, pois, serviria para estudos dentro da instituição. “Se conseguíssemos (a carcaça) seria muito bom para conhecer mais sobre a biologia desse animal. Tenho colegas que trabalham com mamíferos e que iam adorar ter esse bicho para estudos de dieta, reprodução e parasitismo”, justifica.
Com ampla distribuição nas Américas, a espécie ocorre desde o sul dos Estados Unidos, passando pelo México, América Central até a América do Sul, do leste dos Andes até o Atlântico, descendo até o centro da Argentina. No Nordeste, o gato-mourisco possui registros nos estados do Ceará, Pernambuco e da Paraíba, em áreas de Caatinga e Mata Atlântica.
Quanto ao seu status de conservação, conforme a IUCN (União Internacional da Conservação da Natureza) a espécie foi avaliada como pouco preocupante (LC – Least concern)
